Known as "cherophobia," this disorder derives its name from the Greek words "chero" and "phobia," meaning happiness and fear, respectively. Cherophobia causes sufferers to purposely avoid fun experiences and activities that invoke positive or pleasurable emotions. Sufferers often skip social events out of the fear that enjoying themselves will cause something terrible to happen. Cherophobia is generally triggered by experiencing a traumatic event in early childhood.
