In the early 20th century, explorers in Cumae, Italy, made an unusual discovery. Next to the entrance of an ancient temple of Hades, the god of the dead, they found three chainsattached to a wall. The chains reportedly once held in place the three heads of Cerberus. Cerberus was one of the scariest creatures of ancient Greek mythology▼. He was a giant dog with three heads and the tail of a snake. He guarded the gates of the underworld▼ for his master, making sure that the living couldn’t get into hell and the dead couldn’t escape. As the guardian of the underworld, Cerberus appeared in many ancient myths▼. In one of the most famous, Cerberus fought the powerful hero Hercules. At the start of the tale, King Eurystheus gave Hercules 12 tasks to prove his strength. The final one was to capture Cerberus and bring him back to the king. The fight went back and forth, but Hercules won in the end. Hercules knew the beast was important, so he didn’t kill it. After bringing Cerberus back to show the king, Hercules returned the creature to Hades so it could continue doing its job.
