Review—Little Taipei Little Taipei is a small, newly opened restaurant in downtown East City. Don't be fooled by the plain whitewashed walls and cold metal tables and chairs. The food here is warm, exciting, and very, very delicious. Opened by Gary Lin last October, Little Taipei is East City's first restaurant serving real Taiwanese food. Dishes like minced pork rice, Taiwanese meatballs, the oyster omelet, and the very popular xiaolongbao (steamed soup dumplings) are packed full of taste and character. You won't find all of Taiwan's famous dishes here, however. "We felt that some dishes, like stinky tofu and chicken feet, would just be too strange for most locals," Lin says. "We wanted to give people a taste of Taiwan, but felt it was important to have dishes that we knew local people would enjoy." Lin also serves Taiwan's unique bubble milk tea—sweet milk tea with "bubbles" of chewy tapioca. Finally, a special tip from this writer: for dessert, order the mango shaved ice. It's out of this world! |
