A Beautiful Sign of Spring
by Daniel Howard

The narcissus is a beautiful flower with a rich history.

The narcissus is a flower, but it's so much more than that. Going by many names, including daffodil and Easter bell, the narcissus has a special place in Western culture.
The origin of the flower, according to Greek mythology, goes back to a man named Narcissus. While there are many _(1)_ of the story, in one common telling, Narcissus is an incredibly handsome young man. All sorts of women fall in love with him, including magical beings and goddesses, but he _(2)_ them all away. Finally, he sees his own _(3)_ in a lake and falls in love with it. He _(4)_ falls into the lake and drowns, and at the site of his death, the first narcissus flower blooms.
Today, the narcissus is associated with spring, as these flowers usually appear during that season. Being part of spring, the narcissus is a _(5)_ of life and rebirth, and it's featured in many festivals. In Austria, there is a festival _(6)_ entirely to the narcissus called Narzissenfest. People come from around the country and all over the world to _(7)_ the blooming of the star-shaped narcissus from the middle of May until early June. The festival includes parades, traditional performances, and tourist attractions. The festival is a modern event that started in 1960, but it has become a celebration of traditional Austrian culture. This spring, be sure to be on the lookout for the narcissus flower when it blooms.
