Chatting about language |
Matthew: I heard that you speak a bit of Spanish. Denise: Yeah, that's right. I used to live in southern California, and there are a lot of Spanish-speaking people from Latin America there. Matthew: That's cool. Do you think you could teach me? Denise: I guess so, and maybe you can teach me Chinese. Matthew: That sounds good. Denise: How many languages can you speak? Matthew: Good question. I suppose my English is OK, then there's Mandarin, obviously. I also speak Amis, the language of my indigenous tribe. Denise: Wow! Do all indigenous people speak their tribal languages? Matthew: No. Quite a few of my Amis friends don't speak the language, but I think it's important to keep the culture alive. Denise: How about Taiwanese, do you speak that as well? Matthew: I know a little, but I'm not very good at it. Denise: That's incredible. You already speak four languages and you want to learn another. Matthew: Ha ha. I guess I just love talking.
