One New Zealand Gang Shows Its Heart Is in the Right Place
by Brian Foden

The Tribal Huk gang has been called "the sandwich gang" because of its program to provide free lunches for hungry school kids.

When the word "gang" is mentioned, people usually think of violent thugs committing crimes such as assault, robbery, and even murder. However, in the Waikato region on New Zealand's North Island, the Tribal Huk gang is doing something _(1)_ less menacing. In fact, it is exactly the opposite of what gangs are usually _(2)_. Every weekday, the gang's members make 500 sandwiches to feed hungry school children. Doing so isn't exactly cheap as it costs the gang, which has been dubbed "the sandwich gang," roughly NZ$2,150, or about NT$46,000 each week. The program is paid for by the _(3)_ from the gang's farm, where they raise animals for meat. After running the service for four years, the Tribal Huk gang now wants to _(4)_ it to feed hungry kids across New Zealand, not just those in one region of the country's North Island. To help pay for that broader initiative, the gang started a _(5)_ with an initial funding of NZ$21,500, or about NT$467,000.
New Zealand has perhaps the highest number of gangs per capita in the world, ranging from motorcycle gangs and street gangs to ethnic gangs like the Tribal Huk. The Tribal Huk's leader, Jamie Pink, doesn't deny his _(6)_ past, admitting he has gone to jail for "bashing people, a few assault charges, the odd GBH (grievous bodily harm)." Some _(7)_ that the "sandwich gang" is providing free lunches as a way of recruiting new, younger members, but Pink strongly denied that was the case. He says, "It'd be a terrible thing if that was what we were doing it for; it definitely isn't. There's no cover for anything. It costs too much."
